Application: M130x3 cap nuts on a hydrogen heat exchanger with a welded diaphragm gasket and dollar plate construction.

Old method: Traditional torquing.
Problem in old situation: With dismantling for internal inspection of the heat exchanger during a breakdown it appeared that 16 of the 20 bolts were galled on both sides of the exchanger.
It was not possible to undo the nuts. The bolting contractor had stopped work because it was not feasible to use the traditional torque tool. The combination of cap nuts, high side load (torque needed was more than 50,000 Nm) and the fine thread meant that traditional torque methods could not be applied.
Benefits: Downtime for the plant concerned, amounted up to +/- EUR 1 million in lost revenue and expenses for 1 day. The traditional manner was to work for 5 days, 24 hours a day, to undo the nuts, which did not provide the results required. up to

Support forces are reduced when one bolt is skipped. When supported on both sides of the nut to be fastened the side load is also reduced, which is of great importance with cap nuts as that prevents so-called ‘galling’ of the bolt.
The outer bushings fall on the neighbour bolts, while the cap nut is tightened in the middle. This results in a considerable reduction in the spreading/scattering in the bolt force, thereby improving the quality of the bolted connection. Safety is also improved as the risk of finger entrapment is reduced.
